Mwalimu Gregg Tendwa

Bio

Gregg Tendwa is a multimedia artist, freethinker, and afrofuturist questioning and establishing the future of African identity. He explores social reality through music, photography, fashion, food, stories and games and ardently opposes anything authoritarian.

His djing, producing, and remixing style has been described as afro-cosmic-archeology, he is digging and unearthing the forgotten and the futuristic. He emanates afrogoodness from the blend of Afrohouse, Afrofunk, Aropop, Afrojazz, Afrosoul, Afrobeat, Highlife and experimental Electronica.

He is hugely influential in the Afro + Electro movement in East Africa. He is the co-founder of Santuri East Africa, a social enterprise renown for organizing the roving pop-up-studios sessions, Santuri Safari. He is the pioneer and executive producer of Bengatronics, a sound that blends sweet as sugarcane rhythms of the traditional Benga style of music from Kenya, also interpreted as Kanindo/Sungura music in Zimbabwe, and the cutting edge of electronic music.

In 2015, he toured/performed in Arusha, Jinja, Kampala, Daresalam and Amsterdam, in addition to headlining the EABL Shekereka Tafrija promotion launch at Buffet Park, Nairobi. He has shared stage with German Dj Duo schlachthofbronx and the Jimmy Hendrix of Kora, Sekou Kouyate from Guinea at Up Life IV. In 2015, he also opened for berlin based Dj Zhao, a journalist, visual designer, and ambassador of rhythm.
