5 love songs for Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a time when people buy each other gifts and exchange endearments while reflecting on the state of their relationship. But what would this so-called day of love be without music? Probably still Valentine’s Day – but let’s be honest, the music makes it more special.
Music has the power to make lasting memories. That’s why it is crucial to select the perfect playlist for a wedding. Older couples remember the day they fell in love because of that one special song they share.
Here is a list of songs that we think could make you Valentine’s Day a tad more special and memorable. Who knows, maybe 50 years down the line you and your partner will remember this playlist and reminisce about the good old days.
2Baba – African Queen (2004)
‘African Queen’ is Nigerian 2Baba’s celebration of a woman who he regards as royalty. Given the context of the video, you could say that this one is a love note to all African women. In the new video, which 2Baba recorded to celebrate his fourth wedding anniversary, the song is solely dedicated to his wife.
Pitch Black Afro ft Verd – Neva Let You Go (2006)
‘Never Let You Go’ is a comical yet serious take on what a love song is supposed to be. South Africa’s Pitch Black Afro raps sweet nothing to his lover who he calls his “Kentucky Rounder” while Verd sets the mood with romantic singing to balance the craziness of Pitch Black.
LaSauce ft Amanda Black – I Do (2017)
South Africa’s La Sauce likes to take things slow and ‘I Do’ is no different. The love song gives you the feeling that you and your partner could possibly be in love forever. Her use of real-life couple rapper Priddy Ugly and TV personality Bontle Modiselle adds authenticity to the love she speaks about – the two are one of South Africa’s favourite couples.
Sauti Sol ft Tiwa Savage – Girl Next Door (2018)
This is a song for those who are still in the courting phase, and for those who are meant to be together but not quite ready to profess their love for each other. This one is a definite icebreaker for those who feel they lack the vocabulary or guts to express themselves freely. And the collaboration between Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage and Kenya’s favourite boy band Sauti Sol itself breaks down all kinds of barriers in the name of love.
Davido – Flora My Flowa (2018)
‘Flora my Flowa’ is Davido’s latest offering. In the song he makes it thoroughly clear that his attention would never drift from his current lover. “If your behind was my class I would never miss school,” he sings. Enough said – Davido must really be in love.
