African stars up for honours at 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards
African musicians, including Nigeria’s Tems and Burna Boy, Ghana’s Black Sherif, South Africa’s Blxckie and Zimbabwe’s Nadia Nakai, are among the nominees for the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards which will be taped at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on 30 September.
The awards, which were first held in 2006, celebrate the best hip hop performers, producers and music video directors.
Tems earned two nods for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration for her appearance on US rapper Future’s ‘Wait For U’, which also features Canadian rapper Drake.
Black Sherif, Blxckie and Nadia Nakai are up for Best International Flow alongside Benjamin Epps and Le Juiice (France), Central Cee and Knucks (UK), Tasha & Tracie (Brazil) and Haviah Mighty (Canada).
Burna Boy was shortlisted in the Video Director of the Year category for his effort on the visuals for ‘Last Last’.
Meanwhile, Drake leads the pack with 14 nods, followed by Kanye West with 10 and Kendrick Lamar with nine.
Rapper Fat Joe will host the awards this year. “We’re going to celebrate music, culture, and entertainment, honour the biggest and brightest stars in the world and make this an unforgettable night full of laughs and surprises,” he said.
BET EVP Connie Orlando added: “Fat Joe is hip hop royalty. He has represented the art form and the Bronx, the birthplace of hip hop, throughout his outstanding musical career. He is a treasured friend of the network and we’ve loved seeing and supporting his evolution to becoming the superstar he is today. We can’t wait to watch him take the stage with his vivacious energy, standing together with today’s hottest and beloved hip hop stars.”
The 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards will air exclusively on BET on 5 October at 3am CAT.
