AFRIMAs return to Nigeria
The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMAs) have announced that the sixth edition of the event will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from 20 to 23 November 2019.
The AFRIMAs will run under the theme Feel Africa, an initiative aimed at showcasing the essence of African through music and culture.
Lagos hosted the awards ceremony from 2014 to 2017. It was then held in Ghana's capital Accra in 2018. In late July, the organisers of the AFRIMAs opted to withdraw the hosting rights from Ghana for the 2019 edition, citing the country's lack of capacity in meeting its financial and contractual obligations.
"Nigeria playing host to the sixth AFRIMAs is indicative of the beneficial relationship the country has developed with the AU [African Union] and the AFRIMAs, as we use this continental awards platform to strengthen Africa's culture industries while also promoting the cultural identity and integration of Africans," African Union Commission head of culture Angela Martins said.
"We are also appreciative of Lagos State Government for hosting four previous successful editions of the annual awards programmes of events. We are confident that hosting the AFRIMAs in Lagos State, Nigeria, will in no small measure constitute significant achievements for the promotion of the African Union's cultural objectives through the AFRIMA platform".
Meanwhile, music fans have begun voting for their favourite artists via the AFRIMAs official website.
The AFRIMAs, including peripheral events, will be broadcast live to 84 countries around the world including live streaming on the AFRIMA website and other online partner platforms.
