Apple Music this week launched a weekly global ranking playlist of trending emerging artists through its Shazam music recognition app.
The Shazam Discovery Top 50 playlist will be updated every Tuesday and is available exclusively on Apple Music. The chart will feature songs that are trending in the US and more than 10 other countries. The playlist will eventually accommodate artists from across the globe.
“The ranked songs are all at different points in their lifecycle, and the majority of artists represented are emerging and up-and-coming,” Apple Music said. “All are experiencing a level of momentum indicative of the future potential of hitting the top of Shazam’s charts, and show any or all of the following patterns: moving quickly through Shazam’s charts, growing rapidly, steadily and/or geographically.”
Shazam Discovery Top 50 is an addition to other charts offered by Shazam, including the Top 200 chart for the US and various other countries.
Apple Music also uses data from Shazam in its Apple Music for Artists analytics tool, which avails information such as top cities and countries. By itself, the music app allows users to identify songs by merely listening to music playing around them and has been downloaded more than 1 billion times around the world, with users identifying songs using the app over 20 million times daily.
