Aster Aweke to perform live at ‘Ewedhalew’ concert
Ethiopian songstress Aster Aweke, sometimes referred to as Ethiopia’s Aretha Franklin, is set to make a comeback at the ‘Ewedhalew’ (Love You) concert slated for Friday 11 September at the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa after a seven-year hiatus. She will be joined by Madingo Afework, a singer of both cultural and contemporary Ethiopian music.
Aweke’s last performance within Ethiopia was in May 2009 that saw more than 10 000 people attending the ‘Unity Through Music’ concert that was staged at capital’s Millennium Hall. Aster, who has been around the music scene for close to 40 years, is expected to reconnect with her fanbase once again after a long absence on the Ethiopian live music scene. Organised by Yugovia Entertainment and EML Events the ‘Ewedhalew’ concert is a celebration of Ethiopia’s New Year's Eve.
With many of her songs considered anthems to her fans in Ethiopia, as well as to the many Ethiopians in the diaspora, she continues to win the hearts and minds of world music lovers. Ewedihalehu (I Love You), her 24th album, was produced in 2013 with her longtime arranger, Abegasu Kibrework Shiota, and also features the work of exciting new music producers Henock Negash and Maru.
Madingo Afework, whose new album Siwedlat has earned him nominations at the Leza Awards, Ethiopia’s leading awards for performing artists, is also well-known for his charity work. One of his exceptional accomplishments was singing the well-known Ethiopian cultural song 'Tizita' in three different ways, as it was sung by three different singers in a single release. He imitated all three singers so closely and so well that it was difficult to tell the difference from the original one!
