Betty G awarded Ethiopia Star of Honour
Ethiopian singer Bruktawit Getahun, popularly known as Betty G, has been bestowed the Order of the Star of Honour of Ethiopia as commander.
The award was presented by Ethiopian Crown Council president Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie at the recently held Victory of Adwa Dinner in Washington, DC, recently.
The accolade recognises Betty G’s commitment to Ethiopian music, culture and humanitarian efforts, highlighting her role in promoting Ethiopian identity on the global stage.
Betty G joins the ranks of celebrated Ethiopian artists like Mahmoud Ahmed and Maritu Legesse, who have previously been honoured with the distinguished award.
The ceremony featured a performance by Betty G, who showcased her latest single ‘I Pray’, a collaborative project with renowned American jazz musician Donald Hayes.
The Star of Ethiopia, an order established by Emperor Menelik II in the late 19th century, serves to recognise significant contributions to the nation, whether by Ethiopians or international allies. The order’s design, echoing Ethiopia’s rich heritage with its filigree pattern inspired by traditional shields, symbolises the nation’s enduring spirit and valour. Throughout history, the manufacture of the order has traversed continents, from its initial creation in Ethiopia to its crafting by renowned jewellers in Europe.
