The Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) executive committee has appointed a policy and research sub-committee to adhere to international practices and trends in the music industry.

The sub-committee will be responsible for the formulation of policies to augment the constitution and regulations of BOMU, as well as for strategic and operational dimensions of the local music industry. It will look at amending the BOMU constitution following an outcry for a need to review and amend it to conform to modern-day standards.
The sub-committee will be led by Jimmy Muyambo who will serve as its chairperson. Muyambo will be deputised by Thato Seipone while Mmapula Moatswi will serve as secretary. Other members include Lucia Dottie (treasurer), Boyson Mokone and Kabelo Eric.
The sub-committee will report to BOMU secretary-general Winfred Rasina and work under the supervision of administration and operations vice-president Papie Rakhudu.
“The current constitution of BOMU, which was last amended in 2010, needs a comprehensive review and amendments to cater for what has happened in the creative space, especially the music industry within the past 10 years – and most notably to predict trends and focus areas for the next 10 years,” Rasina said.
“This sub-committee will also formulate a long overdue code of conduct, which will advise and guide all members of BOMU and the disciplinary committee of BOMU on expected conduct within the ambits of BOMU and its friends, funders, sponsors, partners, consultants and service providers.”
In February, BOMU appointed a women’s wing, led by music promoter Zenzele Hirschfeld, to advocate for the well-being of female musicians and campaign for equal representation in the country. BOMU president Phemelo Lesokwane told Music In Africa that the union was working on a number of new projects that would be announced in due course.
