Botswana: Danielle Swagger drops Yelele visuals
Reunion-based, Botswana-born rapper Danielle Swagger has unveiled the music video for ‘Yelele’, a track from her debut album Are You Ready?
‘Yelele’ is a catchy Afro-hip hop track boasting an infectious rhythm and empowering lyrics. The culturally diverse music video, directed by Christophe Durand and filmed by Colours Island Productions on Reunion Island, utilises the word ‘Yelele’, which holds traditional significance and is used during celebratory occasions to express joy and victory.
“This project is close to my heart as it reflects my growth, encounters and journey in music, 10 years on,” Danielle Swagger said. “It’s an epitome of how teamwork makes the dream work. A host of people came on board to assist us in the production of ‘Yelele’, which took over a year to complete, so I extend huge thanks to our collaborators and sponsors.”
The video begins with striking imagery of the fierce Motswana artist arriving on Reunion Island, underscored by the roar and crash of ocean waves. Adorned in leopard-themed African attire, she is greeted by traditional dancers who depict maloya from the island’s slavery history. Danielle Swagger performs the tsutsube traditional dance, joining the maloya dancers to symbolise the unity and relationship between Africa and the Indian Ocean.
As the scenes switch to the darkness of the night at Museum Le Vieux Domaine, viewers are transported to a historic monument. This location carries great historical significance, being a place where history, traditions, nature and the art of living in Reunion are honoured.
