Call for applications: Culture Connects cultural producer
The British Council is seeking a cultural producer with experience in co-creating and delivering a series of insight-gathering conversations across nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) for its 2022 Culture Connects programme.
The key purpose of these events is to re-engage with the arts and culture sectors in each country through a series of topical, sector-led conversations and strengthen or create new connections between creatives.
Through this work, the programme aims to gain sector insights, understand shifts in the landscape due to COVID-19 and create new or deeper connections for brokering.
The countries are Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Expected outcomes
- More opportunities for purposeful engagement, collaboration, exchange and practice development for artists and creative professionals.
- Appreciation of arts and culture trends/insights as a result of the arts conversations and events.
- Greater intercultural competence/confidence to work in unfamiliar contexts and increased knowledge to create connections internationally with UK artists and creative professionals.
Assignment objectives
- Co-create the series of events working closely with the British Council team based in SSA.
- To support marketing and communications of the events across social media platforms, including online audience engagement.
- To support the delivery of hybrid events.
- To put together the conversations into a meaningful insights report with recommendations that can be further developed.
Scope of work
- Co-create the series conversations, working closely with British Council teams across the nine countries. Ensuring the events are contextualised, relevant and magnets for sector engagement.
- Support in the identification of potential speakers through own networks or research.
- Support in the marketing and communications of the events across various platforms including inputting into the design of the campaign assets working with the British Council team and graphic design consultants.
- Deliver at least 16 conversations over a period of eight months (August to March 2023).
- Potential travel to at least three SSA countries where the project is being delivered.
- Produce one full report and output of the conversations including audience reach (both online/offline).
- The output of this work can be in the form of infographics, short videos, zines etc.
Qualifications
This is an opportunity for individuals/collectives who are keen to grow their knowledge and networks across SSA. It is for arts/creative practitioners who are open to new ideas, looking at creating new, innovative, cutting-edge work, and able to collaborate and build long-term relations including opportunities for further similar work.
Individuals/collectives who have the following skills and experience can apply:
- At least three years of experience delivering similar work in the arts and culture sector of SSA, specifically working within cultural relations and creative collaborations.
- Evidence of networks, both online and offline, which can be used for content distribution, and audience engagement to reach wider and diverse audiences.
- Have the ability to work with stringent timelines.
- Able to work in a diverse team from different cultural backgrounds.
- Experience of coordinating multiple teams to meet set objectives
- Experience in consolidating reports, checking data quality and producing final reports for clients.
- Open to ideas and feedback from the team to ensure quality work is achieved and work objectives are met.
- Good communication skills and comfortable hosting conversations.

- Contract end: 31 March 2023
- Extension clause date: 31 March 2023
