Spotify data reveals surge in heartbreak music across Sub-Saharan Africa
Music has long been a source of comfort during emotional moments, and new data from Spotify reveals a significant rise in heartbreak song streams across Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the Valentine’s season, the platform recorded a 194% increase in heartbreak music consumption, highlighting the universal connection between music and human emotions.

Among the countries analysed, Nigeria saw the most dramatic increase, with heartbreak song streams surging by 626%. Ghana followed with a 226% rise, while Uganda recorded a 206% increase. Kenya also experienced substantial growth at 189%, with Tanzania and South Africa seeing rises of 132% and 116% respectively. The data suggests that across the region, more people are turning to emotionally resonant music during Valentine’s season, whether to celebrate love or cope with its loss.
The emotional weight of heartbreak is not limited by gender. Spotify’s data shows that 52% of heartbreak song listeners in Sub-Saharan Africa are male, while 46% are female. This challenges traditional gender stereotypes, indicating that both men and women turn to music as a means of processing emotional pain.
During the 2024 Valentine’s period, global heartbreak anthems dominated playlists in the region. The most streamed songs included ‘Someone You Loved’ (Lewis Capaldi), ‘lovely’ (Billie Eilish & Khalid) and ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ (James Arthur).
Listeners also frequently streamed music from artists such as Tate McRae, Lord Huron, and Tom Odell, as well as emerging musicians known for their emotionally charged lyrics.
Spotify data indicates that heartbreak music is most commonly played between 4pm and 6pm, coinciding with evening commutes and moments of winding down after the day. This suggests that for many, music serves as both a coping mechanism and an emotional outlet, helping listeners process their feelings through lyrics that resonate deeply.
The sharp rise in heartbreak song streams highlights the power of music to connect people through shared experiences of love and loss. Whether providing comfort to those dealing with fresh heartbreak or offering solace to those carrying emotional scars, music continues to serve as a companion in times of solitude and reflection.
