SA: Finalists announced for 2025 National Playwright Competition
Four playwrights have been selected as finalists in the National Playwright Competition, moving one step closer to having their work staged at the 2025 National Arts Festival, organisers have announced.
- Thozama Busakwe is among the finalists.
The competition, established to support emerging playwrights, aims to provide a platform for new voices while offering mentorship to help refine and develop scripts for the stage. One of its defining features is that entrants are encouraged to write in any language of their choice.
Now in its fourth edition, the competition has previously recognised Amy-Louise Wilson, Koleka Putuma, and Sibongakonke Mama as winners. This year’s finalists will each receive R5 000 and be paired with a mentor to guide them through the final stages of their play’s development.
The overall winner will be awarded an additional R20 000, along with the opportunity to have their play produced and performed at the 2025 National Arts Festival.
The four 2025 National Playwright Competition finalists are:
- Thozama Busakwe (Johannesburg, Gauteng)
- Lwando Sindaphi (Cape Town, Western Cape)
- Naledi Malotana (Makhanda, Eastern Cape)
- Campbell Meas (Johannesburg, Gauteng)
