Goethe-Institut (GI) in South Africa is calling on artists to submit proposals for the 2020 Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS) fund.
- Zara Julius's 'Proclamation 73' was among the projects supported in 2018.
The programme will support work realised all over South Africa ranging from workshops to exhibitions, events and performances – including music, dance, visual art, literature, film and theatre projects.
How to apply
Interested individuals should download the application form or submit their proposals via email at togpsapplication@goethe.de. Read the GPS FAQs here.

Framework
- Only projects of a non-commercial nature will be considered
- The GI offers financial support for chosen projects to the maximum amount of R60 000. Should the budget exceed this amount, the artist/project team should seek further support, information of which should be included in the budget plan for this application form
- In the event that the person who is to realise a chosen project lives outside of South Africa, the GI will support up to half of their economy flight ticket cost in order for them to be present to realise the project
- The artist/project team will be responsible to work out terms of reference with the space where the project will take place, detailing the basis of the partnership. The artist is responsible for realising the work and will be held accountable
- The profile of the space has to be such that realisation of proposed project is viable
- The signed letter of commitment from the space is essential
- Work produced remains the property of the artist. The GI and GPS must however be acknowledged in all subsequent showings of the work and mentioned in all press relating to the work
- The GI needs to approve all promotional material, including press releases and invitations related to the project before anything goes to print or is electronically, or otherwise, distributed
- The GI will not be held liable for accidents of any kind to the artist and/or third parties
- The artist and hosting partner are responsible in their individual capacities to make tax payments related to the project grant if and when required. The GI cannot be held responsible for any related issues
- Only one project proposal per artist will be considered by the jury
“GPS is envisioned as a non-commercial, artist-centered free platform, designed to support not only the artists and their projects, but also the many structures, spaces and festivals that currently exist and need partnerships of this nature in order to continue their work,” the institute said in a statement. “GPS enables creators in all artistic disciplines to select the space and infrastructure they wish to work with. If awarded, a GPS grant would support both the hosting space and the project itself.
“The new project signals a move to decentralise, supporting smaller spaces, and also those situated outside of the large metropoles. Practitioners will be able to produce their work locally with a partner of their choice and a GPS grant. A public call for proposals is presided over by an independent jury of arts professionals, who will make the project selection.”
