Call for applications: SA State Theatre sound engineer
The South African State Theatre is looking for an experienced professional to occupy its sound engineer post. The closing date for applications is 11 April.
The successful candidate will report to the production manager and be responsible for the management and delivery of all sound related needs and requirements of the South African State Theatre.
Key objectives of the role
- To take responsibility for the management and delivery of all sound needs and requirements for the South African State Theatre’s productions and associated projects.
- To maintain the highest standards in the theatre’s work.
Requirements
- National diploma or higher education specialising in sound design and engineering.
- Minimum five years’ experience in sound design.
- Minimum two years supervisory experience.
Administrative responsibilities
- To oversee the organisation of sound requirements for in-house productions, co-production and rentals.
- To oversee the sound department team. This includes administration as may be required.
- To recruit and manage freelance sound technicians, engineers and crew.
- To train and or identify training programmes for fellow department members on current systems and mixing consoles as may be necessary.
- Take lead responsibility for planning and supervising the maintenance of sound equipment and infrastructure.
- Keep up to date with current sound technology.
- Advise on new sound equipment purchases.
- To ensure compliance (personally and within the department) with all health and safety procedures and regulations.
Production responsibilities
- Attend production meetings, progress meetings, read-throughs and rehearsals as may be required.
- Work with the sound designer to realise a production’s sound design and needs.
- Run sound set-ups, technical rehearsals and strikes.
- Create production schedules in conjunction with the production manager and other heads of departments.
- Recruit, manage and schedule sound engineers and technicians in consultation with the production manager.
- From time to time, act as associate sound designer on productions.
Preferred minimum knowledge and skills
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of current sound equipment and practices.
- Experience of rigging sound equipment.
- Proven experience of using analogue and digital sound desks and using Qlab.
- Proven experience of sound design.
- Experience and proven skill in mixing live sound for theatre and music.
- Proven ability to read and understand ground plans and technical drawings.
- Experience of using CAD or similar drawing software.
- Ability to lead and manage a team.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Computer literate on MS Office.
- Experience in managing budget.
- Driving licence and own reliable transport.
