About Mashujaa Day
Mashujaa is Swahili for 'heroes'. The annual celebration was first organised by activists in 1958. After Kenya gained independence in 1963, the date was embedded in law as Kenyatta Day in honour of Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta. In 2010, Kenya adopted a new Constitution and Kenyatta Day was renamed to Mashujaa Day to celebrate all those who contributed to the country's independence.
