Call for entries: Voice for the Voiceless scores
American soprano and operatic activist Chelsea Hollow is accepting entries for contemporary classical settings of texts of activists, poets and any words intended to activate the listener.
Hollow is known for working with composers to create inventive new musical works music in any language while exploring genre crossing within a structure that is classically driven. She is also a curator of Voice for the Voiceless, a recital project presenting works that add empathy to public discourse and inspire collective growth within the community.
"Voice for the Voiceless is a curated programme celebrating women and feminism through a lens of five sets of voices: allies, young women, women from around the world, women of the cabaret and blues traditions. The program features music in six different languages," Hollow says.
Selected works will be performed during the next Voice for the Voiceless season, which will be held in 2021 or 2022 in California. Composers will receive video and audio recordings of each performance.
The fee proposed should be between $500 and $2 000.
Eligibility
- Applicants can be of any age, nationality and geographical location.
- The proposed works can be in any language for soprano and piano.
- The text should be set in the original language, but exceptions will be considered.
- Proposals can be for single song settings or for a set/cycle.
Requirements
The application process is free and applicants will be required to submit the following:
- A cover letter with name, address, email, phone number, website (if possible) and a brief biography (250 words max).
- A written proposal for new work addressing how it will fit into Voice for the Voiceless and a description of ideas for the composition. A brief sketch of musical materials is preferred but is not required.
- Sample of recent works (PDF format).

The application deadline is 30 May 2020.
