Call for scores: Jeunesses Musicales International
As part of its 75th anniversary, the Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) youth music NGO is providing composers with an opportunity to win €2 000 ($2 350) in prize money by composing classical music inspired by the JMI story.
Interested individuals are advised to read the JMI story here before composing the music, which should capture the history and spirit of JMI's grand vision: to bring the youth of the world together through music.
JMI is the largest youth music NGO in the world. It was co-founded by French actor Marcel Cuvelier and the founding president of Jeunesses Musicales de France, René Nicoly.
"We are looking for young composers to submit a contemporary classical piece of music inspired by our remarkable JMI story unfolding over three-quarters of a century," JMI said. "As a global youth music organisation, we would like the audience to feel our youthful energy, as well as the cultural and national diversity within our organisation in your composition. We have a presence on six continents and run programmes that encompass everything from classical and jazz to folk and hip hop."
The winning work will be performed at JMI events in 2021 and professionally recorded for select distribution.
Eligibility
The compositions should be suited for symphony orchestras and should be adaptable to various sizes of musical ensembles.
The following instruments can be used:
- Trumpet, xylophone/marimba, cello, voice, mandolin, piano, trombone, double bass, bassoon, piccolo, flute, viola, clarinet, French horn, oboe, violin, English horn, general percussion and tuba.
Note:
- JMI will be selecting young musicians to perform the winning piece; thus, the level of difficulty should be modest (and use of unconventional instrumentation limited).
- The winner will be expected to guide the selected young musicians in the creation of the recorded performance.
- The winner will be required to create and send electronically all partitions for the symphony orchestra no more than 45 days after the decision at no additional cost.
- JMI reserves the right to share all submissions on its website and social media platforms unless expressly denied this right by the submitting composer.
- JMI reserves unlimited rights to performance, publishing, lending and recording of the successful composition as chosen by the jury. Author's rights for the composition will remain with the composer.
- Unsuccessful submissions may be used for promotional purposes during the competition and within the context of the competition, but will not be used further by JMI. All rights will remain with the submitting composers after the competition's closing.
- Payment of the prize money will only be made on the delivery of the final score and instrumental partitions.
How to apply
- The application form is available here.
The submission deadline is 30 November 2020 (11.59pm CAT).
