Daylin Sass eliminated from Idols SA
Idols SA contestant Daylin Sass will not compete in the next round of the music competition, leaving behind S’22Kile, Kevin, Karabo and Berry who will battle it out for the top three spots on 7 November.
- There are only four contestants left in the Idols SA competition.
S'22Kile performed Rihanna’s song ‘Diamonds’ and was commended by Randall Abrahams who described her as a star. Local singer Kelly Khumalo, who came in as a guest judge, added that she had owned the song. S'22Kile’s second performance mesmerised all the judges who agreed she had found her genre after singing ‘Sonini’ by Sun-El Musician. “This song was a whole lot of you – the look, the style,” Randall said. “It was almost like your own record.”
Kevin consistently impressed the judges throughout the competition despite some constructive criticism from Khumalo for his first performance of DJ Maphorisa’s ‘Banyana’. Khumalo said she loved his performance but warned him to be careful with his notes. Still, Abrahams said he could see him making a record, while Unathi said he had showed off his versatility.
His second outing with Mi Casa’s ‘These Streets’ had Khumalo saying that she thought Kevin was ready for the world, while Unathi paid tribute to his humility, hunger to win and eagerness to improve.
Both Karabo’s performances impressed the judges and her performance of Jennifer Hudson’s ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ served her well. With a standing ovation from Unathi and praise from Abrahams and Khumalo, Karabo had a good evening with her second performance of Brenda Fassie’s ‘Black President’. “I am officially a fan,” Khumalo said. “Let’s just stop the mic and give you the award.”
Berry’s performances, however, did not resonate with the judges. She sang ‘No Tears Left to Cry’ by Ariana Grande and ‘Hold Your Kite’ by Goldfish and Sorana, but both were met with lukewarm responses, with Kelly advising her to consider a vocal coach to smooth the rough edges.
“We are now at the tail end of a very entertaining show, and I am impressed by the talent we have seen throughout this competition,” Abrahams said. “What I am especially pleased about is the fact that the remaining contestants are now beginning to show us their individuality. Going forward, viewers are going to find it very difficult to vote as these remaining contestants are exceptional.”
