Diamond Platnumz launches music buying site

Tanzanian bongo flava sensation Diamond Platnumz is at it again. The award-winning singer has launched a music distribution service, Wasafi.com, which is intended to be a game changer in the country’s music-on-demand space.

Announcing the new move on his Instagram account, Platnumz said that while the service would make it easier for fans to access music and support artists, it would also compete against service sites that had been taking advantage of artists by not paying them their dues.

“It will be sad to see our fans sharing music through Bluetooth or WhatsApp when we have provided an affordable way to buy and support artists,” the multi-award winning artist said, adding that all his music is available on the site. Also accessible is the music of other WCB artists.

A song on the site goes for a flat rate of 300 Tanzanian shillings (13 US cents) and fans can buy music using mobile paying systems such Mpesa, Airtel Money, Vodafone Pesa, Tigo Pesa and MTN Mobile Money, as well as Visa and Master Card.

However, Platnumz is yet to disclose the service’s payment model, which is the crux of online distribution services. Popular streaming and download sites in Tanzania include Mkito, Mziiki and Tigo Music as well as Kenya’s Mdundo. Chizika was launched last year. Each of these sites uses a different payment model, and artists have to choose which one works for them.
