GHAMRO responds to Shatta Wale’s royalties complaint
Last week, dancehall act Shatta Wale alerted the public to a problem with receiving royalties from the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO).
The ‘Kakai’ star asked the body for his royalties on social media. “GHAMRO," he said, "are you ready to pay my royalties or you want me to go haywire?”
The music right's body has undergone a few problems since the election of a new board, headed by Rex Omar, including controversy about the election that brought the new board into power. After overcoming initial issues, the new board announced that it had begun sharing royalties among members, an activity that began on 14 April.
Shatta Wale's outburst led Ghanaian media to ask what had happened to the singer's royalties given the widespread publicity about the disbursement of 2016 royalties by GHAMRO. The inquiries may have come to an end, as the body has responded and it appears the matter will be settled amicably between GHAMRO and Shatta Wale. GHAMRO's board responded to the singer days after his Facebook protest.
During an interview on Citi FM, GHAMRO spokesperson Prince Tsegah said there had been trouble with paying Shatta Wale because of logistics. "Shatta Wale has received royalties once from GHAMRO," he said. "As far as our records are concerned, in 2015, when he was under BullHaus Entertainment, we paid some monies to a specific mobile number that was given to us by his management. Looks like he hasn’t gotten it. And going forward in 2016, we didn’t give him royalties… but his royalties have been issued. It’s there. You know because we need a mode of transfer, which needs authority from the music group camp or the artist himself, which we didn’t get."
Shatta Wale recently released the video for 'Umbrella'. Watch it below:
