Ghana: Abena Rockstar to work with Medikal
Ghanaian artist Abena Rockstar is set to feature rapper Medikal on a forthcoming song.
She hinted at the collaboration in an interview with Music in Africa, but provided no further details on the record except for the title #TheFlavour.
In Early September, Abena Rockstar's self-titled song, ‘Abena’, was selected to feature on the Hip Hop African Podcast, which is hosted by Howard University in the US. The podcast covers hip hop music made by artists from the continent living on the continent or based in the Diaspora.
“This month’s show is focused on songs that features strong lyricism of which Abena Rockstar’s song ‘Abena’ is among their best-selected songs from Africa,” said one of the programme’s hosts.
Asked her opinion on much of today’s focus on beats above lyrics, Abena Rockstar expressed surprised. “I haven't come across of any research about fans not paying attention to song lyrics,” she told Music in Africa.
“I think the issue rather is more about what majority of people want these days. Different genres have evolved from long and tested genres, so there are new people experimenting music and they seems to have people loving it Recognition to me should be people connecting to one's work in various levels of understanding.” So When the message is gotten, that's cements recognition.”
She also spoke about the presence of women in Ghana’s music industry, saying, “It's true but it also so almost everywhere. With hard work and consistency I believe things will get better.”
Abena Rockstar, born Bernice Bediako Poku, grew up loving music and recorded her first project as a secondary school student. She was initially nonplussed to learn her song had been selected for the Howard University podcast. “I didn't really find it a big deal till my whole family and friends started congratulating me,” she said. “Then it hit me like, wow! This is really a big deal. I'm glad the hard work is paying off.”
Abena Rockstar will be performing at the NaijaGhana Beach Rave on 1 October at the Labadi Beach, Accra.
