Ghana: Baaba J unveils third EP In Pursuit of Happiness
Ghanaian singer Baaba J has unveiled a new EP titled In Pursuit of Happiness, which is available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The six-track EP, her third to date, blends a variety of sounds including alté, Afropop, Afro R&B, and Afro-indie.
Heralded by ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Ah Well’ featuring British-Ghanaian producer Juls and Nigerian act Oladapo, In Pursuit of Happiness is rich in soulful vocals and masterful songwriting, inviting listeners into a world of beauty, introspection, and expression.
On the eve of the release of ‘Sunshine’, Baaba J said: “This might be the most vulnerable I’ve been in a song since I started writing in my notebooks in high school.”
She added: “I’m excited about the music I’m sharing this year and Sunshine is our first. The gravity of your support is never lost on me, and I will always appreciate it. I loved writing this song and I hope you can find something for you in it.”
‘Runaway’, another highlight from the project, captures the essence of freedom and longing, with vibes reminiscent of Tracy Chapman’s iconic ‘Fast Car’. The record weaves together groovy melodies and provokes a reflection on personal journeys toward happiness.
“Each track on the EP encompasses a range of moods – from upbeat and fun to chilled and reflective – creating a rich tapestry of sound that resonates with listeners on multiple levels,” a statement explains.
An alumna of Spotify’s EQUAL Africa artist development programme, Baaba J’s work is often praised for her ability to blend her unique artistry with the warmth of her cultural roots, often thanks to her inclusion of the traditional language of Ga, which adds a layer of rich authenticity that enhances the emotional depth of her music.
