Ghana most played songs: Shatta Wale dominates, Ebony tops

As expected the list features a host of the most popular artists from Ghana. Magnom, Samini, MzVee and Sarkodie make a showing with one of their own songs each. Sarkodie sneaks in a second and third time courtesy of his appearances on Fancy Gadam’s ‘Total Cheat’ (9) and Kurl Songx’s hit song ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ (15).

Kidi and reggae-dancehall act Stonebwoy appears twice on the list. But the artist with the most representation on the list is Shatta Wale. His well-known productivity – which by his estimate yielded 100 songs in 2015 – sees him log three songs in the list.

His highest ranked hit ‘Taking Over’ is 6 on the list; his lowest ‘Forgetti’ is number 20. ‘Ayoo’ is sandwiched between both songs.

The top spot, perhaps unsurprisingly given how much attention came her way last year, is occupied by Ebony. Her hit ‘Sponsor’ was the most played song on Ghana radio in 2017. Her appearance at the top spot is sure to enhance calls for her to take the top award – Artist of the Year – at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.  

Speaking about the need for the list, head of MUSIGA Bice Osei Kuffour said, "Data in the industry is missing. When KPMG did the comprehensive study it was very clear that it was very difficult finding data. Henceforth, MUSIGA has decided that every year we will compile the top 20 songs for the year – both gospel and secular."

Other artists on the list include Becca, who comes in at number 18 with her Patoranking collaboration ‘Na Wash’. At number 8, the much talked about viral hit song ‘One Corner’ by Pataapa cracks the top 10.
