Ghanaian gospel singer Florence Adooni to make Europe return
On the back of her successful maiden European tour in the summer, which saw her play some major festivals, Ghanaian singer Florence Adooni is set to make a quick return this autumn and winter.
Adooni has been picked by the jury to play a showcase at this year’s World Music Fair (WOMEX 23) taking place from 25 to 29 October in A Coruña, the city hosting this year’s event on the coast of Galicia in Spain.
WOMEX Showcases place the spotlight on acts from around the globe, whether they are ground-breaking new talents or established maestros, stressing the rediscovery of musical traditions to the very latest in artistic innovation.
The Ghanaian singer is part of her homeland’s thriving Frafra gospel scene, mainly in the far northern regions of Ghana. Born and raised in the Ashanti capital of Kumasi, she surrounded herself with the city’s best young highlife musicians, and now uniquely combines the soul of the northern savannah and the sound of the rainforest region, fusing the best of both cultures into one unique act.
Adooni connects history and modern times with her music, her sound listening as a mix of melodic highlife, where local Ghanaian traditions combine with inspiration from pop, rock and jazz, including lots of festive horns.
Aside from her autumn tour, which takes her to venues in Germany, France and Switzerland in support of her new single ‘Yinne’, Adooni, will, in a special collaboration, play gigs with German artist Erobique. Their collaboration, referred to as Bach In Afrika, began when Erobique visited drummer and producer Max Wiesenfeldt in his studio in Ghana.
