Headies confirm musical performers for 2023 edition
The performers at the 16th edition of Nigeria’s premier music awards, the Headies, have been announced ahead of the main ceremony in Atlanta, US, on 3 September.
The 2023 line-up features Rema, Asake, Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, Fireboy DML, Seyi Vibez, Wande Coal and KCee. The rest are Oxlade, Victony, Spyro and rapper Blaqbonez.
The announcement follows a pre-award reception at the US Consul General Will Stevens’ residence in Lagos last month. During the event, Stevens commended the growing connections between the two countries in the creative sector, emphasising the significance of an inclusive and sustainable creative ecosystem in promoting economic growth and enhancing bilateral people-to-people relations.
“Afrobeats is dominating the American music scene right now and we are so proud to be partnering with the Headies and the Lagos State Government to work together to continue to build on our longstanding bilateral people-to-people ties through music,” he said.
“We remain committed to supporting programmes and initiatives that promote artistic expression, encourage cultural exchange, and strengthen the capacity of Nigerian artists and professionals in the creative industry.”
Headies founder and executive producer Ayo Animashaun expressed his excitement at the growing cultural and artistic exchanges between the US and Nigeria, emphasising the scheme’s commitment to developing talent and innovation in the music industry.
“Our goal is to continue to support the development of talent and nurture innovation in the music industry,” he said.
The forthcoming Headies will reward works released between January 2022 and March 2023. Among the most nominated acts this year are Burna Boy with 10, Asake with nine, and Pheelz and Bnxn with six each.
