The season will feature accomplished international conductors and soloists. It will open with the JPO performing under the baton of US conductor and Memphis Symphony Orchestra music director Robert Moody featuring Venezuelan flautist Joidy Bianco.
The programme includes the overture to Mozart’s opera ‘Così fan tutte’ and his ‘Flute Concerto No 2’ as well as Sarasate’s ‘Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs)’ and Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No 7’.
“We are delighted to be able to offer Gauteng residents and visitors to Joburg a lively and heart-warming winter season,” JPO chief executive and artistic director Bongani Tembe said. “We invite audiences to continue supporting the wonderful, quality work being done by the musicians of the JPO and look forward to being enriched by the power and beauty of classical music.”
Taking the stage with the JPO on 16 June will be the Israel-born Free State Symphony Orchestra artistic director and former assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, Daniel Boico, who will be joined by violinists Jeanne-Louise Moolman and Samson Diamond, who heads the Odeion String Quartet at the University of the Free State. The programme for the evening will feature Mozart’s ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ for violin and viola and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No 5’.
Principal guest conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernhard Gueller, will return to conduct the JPO on 23 June for a concert featuring 19-year-old soloist Leo Gevisser, a South African piano prodigy who is studying at The Juilliard School in New York. On the programme is Rachmaninoff’s ‘Piano Concerto No 4’ and Dvořák’s ‘Symphony No 6’.
The JPO will wrap up its winter season under the baton of maestro Bernhard Gueller. The orchestra will perform with soloist Bryan Wallick, an accomplished American pianist who has lived in South Africa for some years. On the menu for the evening is one of the most dramatic piano concertos in the classical music repertoire, Prokofiev’s ‘Concerto for Piano No 3’. The season will close with a performance of Brahms’ ‘Symphony No 3’.
