Malawi: Aisha De Silva appointed UMP Festival CEO
Chitoliro Productionz has announced the appointment of Aisha De Silva as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the Urban Music People (UMP) Festival.
De Silva, a long-time member of the UMP movement, has been instrumental in the festival’s success since its inception, the organisers said. Her most recent role as a director at last year’s event highlighted her dedication and vision for UMP’s growth. She takes over from Ken “Zizwa” Limwame, who is now the chairman and executive producer of Chitoliro Production.
“This festival is a tribute to the incredible talent and culture in Malawi and across Africa,” De Silva said. “I’m honoured to lead this next chapter, with Lake Malawi as a canvas of inspiration. My vision is to not only celebrate our creativity but also connect African culture with the global community in meaningful ways.”
Her appointment signals a new era of growth and innovation for the UMP Festival. De Silva said she was determined to preserve the rich legacy of the festival while introducing transformative ideas to enhance African creativity and amplify its cultural impact on the global stage.
Ken “Zizwa” Limwame said: “Aisha is not just a leader; she is a visionary who understands the heartbeat of UMP Festival. Her connection to the creative and cultural industries is unmatched, and she has been an anchor for this festival’s success. I have no doubt that her leadership will propel the UMP Festival to new heights. This is a moment of elevation, where we are not only growing as an event but as a movement for African creativity.”
Under De Silva’s leadership, this year’s festival, running under the theme: The Elevation, seeks to be a landmark event. Scheduled to take place from 21 to 27 October, at Cape Maclear, the festival is designed to celebrate African culture and creativity in bold, transformative ways.
Some of the key highlights of this year’s festival include music and dance performances, UMP Music Awards, Cape Maclear Film Festival, Miss UMP Beauty Pageant, Art and Fashion Exhibitions and Sportstainment Championships.
