Nigeria: Tar1q joins Chocolate City label

The news was made public on 12 March, and sees the musician join other acts like singer and producer Young Jonn and rappers Candy Bleakz and Blaqbonez at the company.

“We are thrilled to announce the latest addition to our stellar line up of talents, the dynamic and talented artist Tariq Oluokun, aka Tar1q,” the label said. “This unveiling marks a significant journey for both Tar1q and Chocolate City as we embark on an exciting journey together, pushing the boundaries of creativity and musical innovation.”

Founded by Nigerian lawyer and creative entrepreneur Audu Maikori in 2005, the company is credited with driving the careers of rapper MI Abaga, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince and Brymo, as well as Pryse, Nosa and Dice Ailes among others.

“I thank God for my mom, my family, my team and NuTrybe Records for taking chances in my dreams before anything else and everyone who has been supportive all through till now,” Tar1q said. “This is the next chapter for me and I know it’ll be filled with milk and honey. I’m lucky because all my life nothing has been more constant than growth, this makes me very happy.”

Before finding home at Chocolate City, Tar1q, who was discovered by the label in 2021, was signed to Nu Trybe Records as an incubator artist under the Chocolate City umbrella. His career has seen him transition from a rapper to a versatile singer who blends everything from contemporary Afrobeats, pop, hip hop, and classic R&B. Influenced by legends such as Sade, Wizkid, J.Cole, and Davido, Tar1q describes his unique style as ‘Afro-rhythm’.

He is behind the Son of The Moon EP, as well as well-received singles like ‘Signal’, ‘Bad Intentions’ and ‘Away’.
