Nigerian Afro-folk act Tommy WÁ drops YAKOYO
‘YAKOYO’, which translates to ‘come and be filled’, serves as an open invitation to community and happiness. Lucas Muller (Germany) produced it, with mixing and mastering by Thewa Chaiyadam (Thailand), and additional production and instrumentation by SuperJazzClub’s frontman Øbed (Ghana) and Senku Live’s bandleader and keyboardist Nee Dromor (Ghana).
The opening of the song offers a gentle invitation to weary travellers to take a break and revitalise within the spirit of togetherness. Tommy WÁ’s warm and resonant voice assures them of abundant refreshment and exciting prospects.
Tommy WÁ, who is also a poet and visual storyteller, draws inspiration from contemporary folk, indie and retro soul music. This blend reflects his Nigerian roots while resonating with the diverse musical tastes of Ghana’s capital Accra where he is based.
He is influenced by artists like Michael Kiwanuka, Bon Iver, Brittany Howard, Beautiful Nubia and The Lumineers. Tommy WÁ has performed at notable events such as ACCES 2021 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Pop-Kultur 2022 in Berlin, Germany. He has also taken part in boutique tours to London, Oxford, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
In February, he served as curator for Sofar Sounds’ debut in Accra, connecting artists and audiences through intimate live music experiences. He showcased a wide range of musicians, from rising stars to established performers.
Tommy WÁ spoke to Music In Africa about the impending collection, revealing that he spent six months making it. He noted that the vision of the project involved serving as a guiding light for people facing challenges in finding their purpose.
On the inspiration behind the project, the artist said: “Wanderlust experiences gathered over the last three years of my life as a roadman – both physical and metaphysical – and my immediate folks – friends, family and neighbours – inspired it. Hence, Roadman and Folks.”
