No wins for African acts at BRIT Awards 2024
African popstars including Nigeria’s Asake, South Africa’s Tyla and Cameroonian act Libianca all failed to secure wins at the 44th BRIT Awards (BRITs) in the UK at the weekend.
Held at the O2 Arena in London, the BRITs are the biggest event in British music, and this year’s edition witnessed performances from Rema, British-Albanian act Dua Lipa, British band Jungle, and Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris, among others.
Burna Boy and Asake missed out on the Best International Artist award to American R&B singer SZA, while Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ nominated for the International Song of the Year alongside offerings by Libianca and Tyla, fell short to US act Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’.
Meanwhile, British singer RAYE, born to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and English father, emerged as the night’s biggest winner, scooping six awards out of a possible seven, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. Aside from that historic feat as winner of the most BRITs won at a single ceremony, she also became the first woman ever to win the Songwriter of the Year at the awards.
