“When the name Gibson Kente flashes in the minds of our people, one can’t stop thinking about the great musicals, such as How Long, Sikalo, Laduma, The Load and many more, that kept the townships abuzz in the 1960s and the 1970s,” a statement reads. “Then came the international icon Mbongeni Ngema with a new sound of the township, intertwined with poignant political messages to liberate South Africa in plays like Woza Albert, Asinamali, Sarafina, Township Fever and many more, along with hit songs like ‘Stimela Sase Zola’, ‘Woza My Fohloza’, and ‘Rolihlahla Mandela’.”
