Public Enemy, The Internet confirmed for Afropunk Joburg
South African artist Thandiswa Mazwai, US band The Internet, and Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranada have been confirmed for the Johannesburg edition of Afropunk Festival on Constitutional Hill in 30 and 31 December.
Other US acts billed to perform at the event include American hip hop legends Public Enemy, Big Freedia, Flying Lotus and Thundercat. They will be joined by local artists YoungstaCPT, BCUC, Dope Saint Jude, Faka and Moonchild Sanelly, as well as Mozambique’s Azagaia.
“This year’s theme is The People Resist, a call to action against racism, patriarchy and any form of hate,” the organisers said. “As Afropunk links communities around the world, it’s important for fans to connect with unique experiences for the best value."
The organisers said details about a battle of the bands to select more acts for the festival would be made available soon.
Founded by James Spooner and Matthew Morgan in 2005, Afropunk Festival revolves around a community of young people of all backgrounds, interested in music, art, film, lifestyle sports, fashion and photography. "They [young people] are the influencers, creatives and tastemakers once seen as outsiders, but who now directly affect pop culture," the organisers said.
The festival is held every year in London, Paris, New York, Atlanta and Johannesburg. The event was first held on African soil in Johannesburg in December 2017 and was attended by about 20 000 people.
Tickets to Afropunk Festival Johannesburg are available here.
