Ragga Ragga hitmaker ditches Cassper Nyovest’s record label
Malawian rapper Gemini Major has left Cassper Nyovest’s Family Tree record label. The ‘Ragga Ragga’ hitmaker now plans to launch his own recording stable together with Fresh 2 Def, a company owned by Da LES.
Gemini Major, who is based in South Africa, will name his new venture Rudebouy Major. The announcement was made yesterday via a press release.
"Gemini Major wishes to announce his departure from Family Tree Records,” it reads. "It has been a great journey with special memories made and I'm thankful of all the opportunities, but now it's time to focus on other things and grow as an artist and brand,"
"The future is full of possibilities and I charge ahead with so much optimism and positive vibes. It's a matter of time before Rudebouy Major becomes a force to be reckoned with in the local music space. Watch out for us and all the new artists and collaborations we will unleash in the not so distant future," Gemini Major, whose real name is Gilbert Kamoto, said.
The rapper relocated to Johannesburg in 2013 after meeting Cassper Nyovest at a video shoot of a song that he produced. He later joined the Family Tree Records team and worked with a number of artists. A two-time SAMA Producer of the Year nominee, Gemini Major has produced hits such as ‘Juice Back’ (Nasty C), ‘Ufunan’ (Junior De Rocka), ‘Summer Fever’ (Aewon Wolf), ‘Walking and Dabbing’ (Khuli Chana) and ‘Super Ex’ (Cassper Nyovest).
Since then, Major has made guest appearances alongside hip hop royalty and has seen himself rated highly among South Africa’s biggest producers. Last year, he made headlines with the single ‘Ragga Ragga’, which featured top artists Riky Rick, Lifestyle of Da LES, Nadia Nakai and Nyovest. The song was nominated in the Best Collaboration category at the 2016 South African Hip Hop Awards. It also made headlines in his home country by becoming the first music video by a Malawian artist to hit more than 1 million YouTube views.
Besides hip hop, Gemini Major also produces gospel, R&B, house, dancehall and pop. His portfolio extends to TV production for South African shows such as Gold Diggers, Forever Young and Mo Love.
