SA: Afropop singer Winnie Khumalo dead at 51
South African Afropop singer Winnie Khumalo passed away on 7 January 2025. She was 51.
According to local news, the ‘Live My Life’ hit singer died after a short illness. The news about her death was confirmed by family spokesperson Tshepi Akeepile, who told local media that Khumalo passed away on her way to the hospital.
“She was really not well,” Akeepile said. “Unfortunately, on their drive to the hospital that’s when she passed away.”
Industry players and local artists took to social media to convey their condolences following news of the artist’s passing.
“Devastating news, of the legendary South African singer Winnie Khumalo passing,” Independent Music Performance Rights Association wrote on social media. “We are shattered, heartbroken, and consumed by pain which feels impossible to bear. Her untimely departure has left us shattered.”
SABC 3 presenter Zola Hashatsi wrote: “I am lost for words, an end of an era, I will forever love and be grateful for you and your love, talent and opening your home to me. Rest in eternal peace my dear friend Winnie Khumalo.”
Winnie, born Mofolo North in Soweto, began her music career began at the tender age of 15, with the release of albums such as Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina, which were produced by Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala. In the 1990s, she expanded her musical horizons by venturing into gospel with the album Izono Zami.
Throughout her career, Winnie collaborated with prominent South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie, Pure Magic, Bongo Maffin, and DJ Cleo. Her versatility extended beyond music, with appearances in several TV series, including Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as a feature in Chicco’s film Madluphuthu.
After taking a hiatus from the industry to focus on her family, Winnie made a triumphant comeback in 2007 with the album I Just Wanna Live My Life, produced under Kalawa Jazmee Records. The album achieved massive success, selling over 25 000 copies and earning a gold record. Its hit single, ‘I Just Wanna Live My Life’, topped the charts and garnered multiple nominations, including at the Channel O Music Awards.
Winnie’s career continued to flourish, with notable performances, including a tribute to Brenda Fassie at the Channel O Music Awards and a performance of the hit ‘Mina Ngiyohlala Nginje’ with former president Jacob Zuma during the 2009 ANC election campaigns. Her last album, Woman, is a deeply personal reflection of her experiences, addressing themes of betrayal, family, and life’s challenges.
