SA band Plum returns after 17-year hiatus with new single

The release marks their first release since 2005 and ushers in a new chapter for the group, which has been a defining force in South Africa’s alternative music scene since 1996.

The band, originally founded by Kevin Leicher, Troy Dougans, and Waz Leicher, gained recognition for their distinctive sound, which fused trip-hop, acid rock, nu-metal, drum and bass, and alternative funk. Following the release of their last album, All and Nothing, the members explored separate musical paths, working with some of South Africa’s most respected artists, including Arno Carstens, Chris Chameleon, Josie Fields, and Wonderboom.

Now, Plum’s original members Kevin and Waz have reunited, bringing in new drummer Ryan Greenwood and long-time sound expert Stevie G to revive the band’s signature chemistry and passion for live performance.

“The inspiration came from the excitement of writing new material again, particularly after a few live performances,” Kevin said. “While we never stopped writing individually, collaborating again, especially for Waz and myself, felt both natural and creatively fulfilling. The spark to reignite Plum with a new single, the first of many, has been an exhilarating journey.”

Waz elaborated on the song’s deeper message, saying ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ was about embracing one’s present reality and recognising the power of thought and action. He noted that it was easy to become discouraged by unforeseen challenges, but the key was to stay humble, show up despite imperfections, and hold onto hope. He emphasised that belief had the power to inspire change and that, ultimately, everything would be okay.

With their long-awaited return, Plum’s resurgence promises a renewed energy in the South African alternative music scene, with Don’t Stop Believing signalling just the beginning of their next chapter.
