SA flautist wins scholarship to play in the US

Mthetwa will perform music by South African composers Clare Loveday, Musa Duke Nkuna, Conrad Asman and Hendrik Hofmeyr.

Last year, the NFA invited flautists from around the world to apply for the Myrna Brown International Scholarship and Mthetwa emerged as the sole winner.

“I had to read the email a couple of times confirming that the NFA committee had chosen me as the recipient of the scholarship,” Mthetwa, 32, said. 

“I have always dreamt of attending the NFA Convention but never imagined I would go as a performer. It means a lot for my career as I will be performing at the premier flute event in the world. I will also be featured in the the Flutist Quarterly magazine about my experience at the NFA Convention.”

Mthetwa said she was thrilled to present a repertoire comprising South African composers in the US.

"These are composers who are all very much alive and breaking ground in their field, and I hope to make South African music more widely recognised. I also hope to learn all the newest trends in the flute world and share that knowledge not only in South Africa but with the rest of Africa as well," she said.

In addition to the scholarship, Mthetwa will also be awarded a one-year NFA membership.
