SA: Market Theatre to host Sikelela show on 9 November
The Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa, will play host to Sikelela, a unique celebration of Ingoma, a traditional practice that embodies liberation in action through music.
Slated for 9 November, the event will spotlight a vibrant tradition of jazz and live music, with performances by some of South Africa’s most forward-thinking artists. Taking its name from the word Sikelela, meaning “blessing”, sikelela is famously used in the opening phrase of South Africa’s national anthem.
The event promises to be an intimate and powerful musical experience, bringing together the South African jazz and live music scene. It is a celebration not only of music but of the ongoing journey toward creative freedom and cultural expression. It will feature a matinee show and an evening show, each showcasing diverse talent and exciting collaborations.
Opening the matinee is Litsomo, a collaborative indie-folk project featuring the beloved storytellers Leomile, Muneyi, and KekeLingo. This performance will set the tone with its soulful and heartfelt melodies. Next, the stage will feature a special duo performance from renowned musicians Bokani Dyer and Andile Yenana, who will explore the beauty of keys and synths in a dynamic showcase of their talent.
Closing the matinee is The Brother Moves On, a trailblazing collective known for pushing boundaries in South Africa’s music scene, joined by Tumi Mogorosi and Malcolm Jiyane. This collaboration promises to be an unforgettable fusion of sound and expression.
The evening show will kick-off with a performance by the powerhouse that is Buhlebendalo, whose energy and presence will set the stage for an electrifying night. Following her is The Brother Moves On, returning to the stage with Tumi Mogorosi, Malcolm Jiyane, and Zu for a compelling and innovative performance that will capture the spirit of liberation and creativity.
Closing out the evening is the musical queen of Maseru, Maleh, whose enchanting voice and dynamic stage presence will leave the audience spellbound, bringing the night to a perfect conclusion.
