SA mourns The Rockets lead singer Colin ‘Bones’ Delight
South Africans are mourning the passing on of The Rockets band lead singer Colin ‘Bones’ Delight who died at his home in Johannesburg on 15 February after battling cancer for 13 years.
Delight, 69, was the last survivor of the original band. His wife Helen confirmed the news to local media.
“Colin suffered for a long time,” she was quoted as saying. “The cancer really affected him. He had a lot of pain and decided to stop all medical treatment in June last year. He started off with colon cancer, but three weeks ago, he was hospitalised and doctors said the cancer spread throughout his body. He was at home surrounded by his family every day. It was his choice to go off treatment. He didn’t want to do hospitals anymore.”
Music industry players took to social media to convey their condolences following news of his passing.
“My heart breaks with the passing of the legendary Colin ‘Bones’ Delight,” former Rockets band member Alistair Izobell wrote on social media. “Part of the moulding of my career was The Rockets and the members of this iconic historical band. I spent the better part of my four decade career in their company and was a lead singer at some point.”
Cape Town-based music group The Fantastics wrote: “We are saddened by the news of the passing of our dear uncle ‘Colin ‘Bones’ Delight’. What a huge loss. Our condolences to the family, aunt Helen, our thoughts and prayers are with you. The last man standing from the Big Five. Thank you for the music and the inspiration. Rest in peace sir Bones! Fly high with the angels.”
Local DJ Uncle Cal wrote: “RIP Colin ‘Bones’ Delight, the voice of the prolific Rockets line-up and one of the last OGs.”
Born in Harfield, Cape Town, on 24 February 1954, Delight joined The Rockets in 1971 replacing Robbie Jansen as a vocalist. He stayed with the band until 1988. As a surviving member of the original band, Delight witnessed the break of The Rockettz New Generation, a band which followed in the footsteps of The Rockets.
Delight’s contributions to The Rockets played a significant role in shaping the band’s identity and sound, earning them a dedicated following and a place in music history. His vocal prowess was matched only by his passion for music and his unwavering dedication to his craft. Whether he was belting out rock anthems or delivering soulful ballads, Bones had a way of connecting with audiences on a deeply emotional level, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of hearing him sing.
