SA, Mozambique artists collaborate
Six artists from South Africa and Mozambique are set to engage in an exchange, live event and workshops in Johannesburg and Maputo from 28 June to 1 July. According to the organisers of the exchange, the project was designed to establish a bridge for continuous collaboration between the artists.
Titled Colagem Co! the event is an artistic exchange, live event, workshop and memorandum of understanding formed by Andrew Aitchison (SA) and Tavares Cebola (Mozambique). It was designed to showcase, start a conversation and encourage cross-border collaboration around interdisciplinary practices that emphasise the use of sampling and collage as a cultural production tool.
Now in its first edition, the exchange will feature Felix Laband (SA), Kerry Chaloner (SA), Nandele Maguni (Mozambique), Ricardo Pinto Jorge (Mozambique), Aitchison and Cebola. As part of the programme, Laband will make his Mozambican debut while Maputo-based beatmaker Maguni will perform in Johannesburg for his first introduction to a South African audience.
With the idea of establishing ties among these artists, the project comprises a number of activities, such as two live music shows and a workshop that combines music and visual arts.
“One of the primary goals of Colagem Co! is the establishment of a bridge for continuous collaboration between Mozambican and South African artists,” a Colagem Co! press statement reads. “The emphasis of this collaborative residency is on the artistic disciplines of music/sound production and the visual arts. The short residency will take place in Maputo and will enable six artists to collaborate on new work across different mediums.”
The project is funded by Pro Helvetia Johannesburg with the support of Black Major. The dates and venues for the workshops are as follows:
