SA rapper Da L.E.S stable after suffering a stroke
South African rapper Da L.E.S is admitted to a local hospital in South Africa after suffering a stroke on 26 July.
The news about Da L.E.S’ condition was confirmed by his family on 28 July. “The family of renowned South African musician Da L.E.S is deeply saddened to inform the public that he suffered a stroke at home on Friday, 26 July 2024 and has been hospitalised,” a statement reads.
“Whilst he is in a stable condition, this remains a challenging time for his loved ones, and his family call on the public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult period. Updates on Da L.E.S’ condition will be provided as they become available. Thank you for your continued support.”
The statement was shared on social media with fellow musicians and artists responding with well wishes and support for the ‘Heaven’ hitmaker.
“Bro, praying for you,” wrote Pearl Thusi, with Gigi Lamayne posting a “speedy recovery king” message.
DJ Sbu said: “Prayers, love and strength. God speed.”
Born Leslie Jonathan Mampe Jr, Da L.E.S grew up in a musical family and was exposed to various genres from an early age. He rose to fame in the early 2000s as a member of the hip hop group Jozi. After the group disbanded, he pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album Fresh 2 Def in 2010. He gained widespread recognition with his hit single ‘Fire’ in 2013, followed by successful albums like Mandela Money (2014) and Diamond in Africa (2016). Da L.E.S is known for his unique blend of hip hop, trap, and African rhythms. He has collaborated with prominent artists such as Kwesta, Gemini Major and the late AKA.
