SA: Uwrongo gets nod from Time Magazine
‘Uwrongo’, a song by South African artist Prince Kaybee featuring Ami Faku, Shimza and Black Motion, has been featured on Time Magazine's 10 Best Songs of 2020 list.
‘Uwrongo’ claimed the No 9 spot and is the only African song featured on the list. ‘People I’ve Been Sad’ by French singer Christine and the Queens tops the list, followed by ‘WAP’ (Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion), ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ remix (Bad Bunny, Ivy Queen and Nesi), ‘Little Nokia’ (Bree Runway), ‘Good News’ (Mac Miller), ‘Think About Things’ (Daði Freyr), ‘7 Summers’ (Morgan Wallen), ‘Back Door’ (Stray Kids) and ‘Long Road Home’ (Oneohtrix Point Never).
‘Uwrongo’ reached No 1 on a number of South African radio stations, and held the same position for several weeks on Radiomonitor's South Africa Top 100 chart. It also achieved gold status two months following its release. The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) certifies songs and EPs as gold after they have sold 10 000 units. RiSA equates 120 streams to one unit. It has also amassed more than 3 million views on YouTube.
The single has set the tone for what has become one of Prince Kaybee’s biggest years on the global music scene. The musician has enjoyed much success in the past couple of years with hits such as ‘Gugulethu’, ‘Banomoya’, ‘Club Controller’ and ‘Fetch Your Life’.
The hitmaker also garnered a number of accolades this year, including a Soundcity MPV Award from Nigeria, a third-consecutive DStv Mzansi Magic Award for Song of the Year, and was among the biggest winners at the South African Music Awards securing four trophies, including Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album and Best Collaboration.
