SAMAs Day 3: All the winners
The third batch of winners of the 2020 South African Music Awards (SAMAs) were announced on 5 August.
The subtheme for the night was #ForThaStreets and the ceremony mainly honoured contributions from kwaito, pop and hip hop artists in South Africa.
Hip hop musician Yanga Chief, alongside rapper 25K, kicked off the proceedings, moving down a street as they both recited their rhymes. The 'Utatakho' hitmaker later won in the highly contested Best Hip Hop Album Award for Becoming a Popstar. He dedicated his win to his late father. Blaq Diamond also joined in on the night to perform the hit 'Love Letter'.
Guest presenters included DJ Sabby, Stephanie B and Kid Fonque. Gospel legend Rebecca Malope returned to the event to entertain audiences, alongside comedian Skhumba Hlophe and radio personality DJ Ankletap. The crew was also joined by house musician Supta.
Mlindo the Vocalist was honoured as the Best Selling Artist for his debut album Emakhaya, while gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration continued their winning streak in the Best Selling DVD category by securing a gong for Volume 23 Live at CTICC.
DJ Tira emerged the winner of the Best Kwaito Album Award for Ikhenani. Kurt Darren scooped the Beste Pop Album Award for #Partyjiedier and Matthew Mole walked away with Best Pop Album accolade for Ghost. Dan Tshanda’s widow, Sylvia, and their three sons accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on his behalf. She dedicated it to Tshanda’s fans all over the world.
“It was yet another memorable episode with worthy winners and we extend our congratulations to them,” Recording Industry of South Africa CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said. “We remain thankful for the support from our sponsors, partners and the general public that continue to make the SAMAs the most sought after music accolade in our country.”
The fourth instalment of the 2020 SAMAs will run under the subtheme #ForThaCraft and will be broadcast on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and My Muze on 6 August from 9.30pm CAT. Voting lines for the Music Video of the Year Award closed last night. However, fans can still vote for the Record of the Year until tonight.
