Sambu is ‘meant for greatness’
Gambia’s singer-songwriter Sambu ‘D’ Unstoppable has launched his debut album Meant for Greatness. The occasion of the release took place on 21 November at the Alliance Française in Banjul.
Meant for Greatness, a nine-track album, is produced by Sunland music in collaboration with Genesis Music Entertainment. The album features local artists Gee, Jali Madi and Papa Lengthy. International acts featured include Hakim and Princess Menem, a US-based singer.
At the launch Samabu’s peers Hakim, JaliMadi, Gee, Baddibunka, Mighty Joe, ENC, Jizzle, Nobles, Papa Lengthy, Bobo Dimo, Kerr Gi Family, Royal Messenger, ST, Silky Cris, Lady Quincy and Latville Family performed for guests.
Speaking after the lauch, Sambu, who is also a dancer, producer, actor and an instrumentalist, said plans are been made to promote and market the album in other countries, Nigeria and Ghana in particular. “I have plans to travel and make sure that these links are concrete and get international promotions for me,” he said.
"[A] lot needs to be done to be very honest from the artists’ side to the producers’ side to all the people involved in the music scene. Stakeholders, companies, small record label - we all need to buckle up and try to adjust ourselves [as] there is a lot we need to change. We need to put all this together so we might develop because if we want to compare ourselves to what is happening internationally you need to beat a champion to be a champion and we are like 40 or 50 years behind so we need to buckle up.”
Sambu added that his next project would be The Confessions Rhythm. The project will feature artists both home and abroad. “It is going to be very exciting,” he said. “Fans should expect maximum entertainment.”
