Samthing Soweto, Busiswa to play charity gig in Botswana
South African artists Samthing Soweto and Busiswa will headline the inaugural Boitumelo Foundation benefit concert at Duma FM Grounds in Gaborone, Botswana on 25 August.
The two musicians will share the stage with local artists Hanc C, Charma Gal and DJ Kuchi.
“How do we get everyone to come on board without going around with a donation sheet? This country is mostly made up of young people so we thought it would be great to enjoy while you are also helping," Boitumelo Foundation Benefit Concert organiser Buggicity said.
Buggicity said the Boitumelo Foundation was experimenting with a concept called Put in the Hours, where the public is urged to donate its time to charity in exchange for tickets. This is a similar concept introduced by the Global Citizen Festival where people earn tickets to watch a concert to be headlined by US artists Beyoncé and Jay Z in Johannesburg in December.
"You are not just taking money from your pocket. The concert will a fusion of exciting local and international acts,” he said. “We are hoping to raise 1 million ($97 300), and we are reaching out to the public and corporate entities for assistance as we want to better the lives of people in rural villages especially students."
Founded in 2016 by Choppies CEO Ramachandran Ottapath, Boitumelo Foundation aims to aid education and health in Botswana. It also seeks to promote music, dance, arts, sports and culture through national and international events in the country.
