Sarkodie to perform at Ghana award ceremony
Since the announcement of nominees for the forthcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, fans of Ghanaian music have speculated about the possibility of a Sarkodie performance.
The rapper’s general indifference to his half-dozen nominations appeared to have suggested a disagreement with award organisers Charterhouse from last year remained. The situation looks to have changed now with a recent announcement made by Charterhouse.
Sarkodie has been listed by Charterhouse as one of the performers for the 7 May event. He will be joined by such famous artists of Ghanaian extraction as E.L, who tops the VGMA nominee list with 10 nominations, and Stonebwoy, who has five nominations. Efya, R2Bees, Bisa Kdei are also scheduled to perform.
Charterhouse has also said that a few surprise guests will be featuring onstage. One of these surprises may be Nigerian, says the award organisers.
Sarkodie recently started a controversy online when he made a claim about the superiority of Ghanaian rap in Africa. “Listen imma say this and y'all can debate but when it comes to Rap in Africa?? Ghana got it,” he wrote on social media, starting a debate that has seen comparisons made between South Africa and Nigeria, and now Ghana and Nigeria.
It would be recalled that reggae singer Patoranking has commented on the wealth of music from Ghana. Patoranking, Wizkid, Olamide, Korede Bello, Harry Song have been nominated in the awards' Africa Artist of the Year category.
The video for 'Take it Back,' Sarkodie's new single, was released a fortnight ago.
