SA’s Yvonne Chaka Chaka to headline Uganda charity gig
South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka will headline a children's charity concert at Serena Hotel in Kampala, Uganda, on 20 July.
The ‘Umqombothi’ hitmaker will be joined Ugandan musician and politician Bobi Wine.
The charity event is organised by the Shule Foundation, an organisation that builds schools and offers rehabilitation and skills training for street children across Africa.
“There is a real challenge of children ageing out of the classroom, and through our work we want to construct a school that offers both formal and informal education to children whose age is not aligned with their level of education,” the foundation's co-founder, Jackie Wolfson, told a local publication.
“If we don’t come with better solutions such as education and economic empowerment for our children, the economy of this country stands to be negatively affected”.
Wolfson said the proposed school would be built in the northwestern town of Kigumba and offer training to more than 1 500 former street children.
Bobi Wine told Music In Africa that it was necessary to create an environment where children could learn in peace.
“Street children are always perceived as delinquents or objects of pity,” he said. “But what they really need is the right education, environment and primary healthcare so that they can become productive assets to the nation and positive contributors to the economic development of society.”
The singer has been vocal in the past about the Ugandan education system, which he says produces more job seekers than job creators.
