SA’s DJ Black Coffee bags another international DJ award
South Africa’s DJ Black Coffee continues his quest for glory, after emerging as winner of the prestigious Best Deep House DJ Award at the 2016 International DJ Awards held on Monday in Ibiza, Spain.
The top artist was up against US acts Adam Port and MK, Germany’s Andhim and Dixon, Blond:ish from Canada, Catz ’N Dogz from Poland, Duke Dumont from England and Canada’s Sonny Fodera.
Black Coffee, who recently became the first South African artist to win a BET Award, shared the news on his Facebook page to his 1.7 million fans. “I woke up winner of the Deep House category at this year’s DJ Awards – Electronic Music Awards – Ibiza. Thank you to everyone who voted and to Circoloco for giving us a chance 3 years ago. Go team,” he wrote.
The artist’s star continues to shine, no doubt making him one of the best DJs in the world. Last year he won two prizes at the 2015 edition of the awards, in the Breakthrough and Dance Nation categories. Apart from the above, the KwaZulu-Natal-born DJ raised his international profile when he released a remix of American star Alicia Keys’s hit ‘In Common’ in July. Last month, Black Coffee was among five African stars who were nominated in the Best African Act category at the MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs) to be held at the Ahoy Rotterdam in Netherlands on 6 November. Other stars included are his countryman Cassper Nyovest, Ali Kiba (Tanzania), Olamide (Nigeria) and Wizkid (Nigeria).
The ceremony was presided over by British media personality Des Paul and British radio presenter Lucy Horobin, who presented 21 awards. Twelve of those awards were voted for by music fans.
In a statement, the organisers of the event said, “There was incredible support shown, with the number of votes increasing year on year. There were also nine special awards which were chosen by industry insiders to recognise those who have contributed to the electronic music culture.”
The DJ Awards, held in Ibiza each year, are the only international awards ceremony that exclusively celebrates DJs. Launched in 1998 and held annually, the DJ Awards was created to honour and celebrate DJs who have influenced electronic dance music across the globe. It is the only international DJ awards ceremony to be held in Ibiza and also one of the longest-running award ceremonies in the world. Each year the awards team works together with a panel of electronic dance music experts – from managers, promoters, venue owners, media moguls, record companies, music PR companies and DJs themselves – to help compile the list of nominees. The winners are elected through a combination of public and jury votes.
