Nigeria mourns the passing of Afrobeats singer Mohbad

Local media confirmed the news on Tuesday night, although the circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear.

The singer-songwriter and rapper’s music was characterised by catchy melodies and relatable lyrics that touched on life, love, and personal experiences, and was best known for pop hits like ‘Ponmo’ and ‘Feel Good’.

Born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, the artist was behind the 2020 eight-track EP Light that featured Davido, Naira Marley, and Lil Kesh. In June, he dropped his sophomore EP, with collaborations from Bella Shmurda and Zlatan.

At last year’s Headies Awards, the musician was nominated twice for his contribution on producer Rexxie’s ‘KPK (Ko Por Ke)’. He is also a five-time Beatz Awards nominee. He was formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records before leaving the label in 2022.

News of Mohbad’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief on social media. “Damn! Mohbad,” Olamide tweeted. "May you find peace," Blaqbonez added.

“RIP Mohbad,” singer Iyanya posted. “Your journey on earth will never be forgotten. May God receive you in his holy hands.” UK rapper Ms Banks wrote: “Gone but never forgotten.”
