Spotify introduces customisable playlist mixing feature
Spotify has announced a new playlist mixing function that allows users to customise transitions and effects between tracks.

The feature, currently in beta, is available to “eligible Premium users” and can be accessed via the “Mix” button on playlists. It offers an “Auto” option for instant blending, as well as presets such as “Rise” and “Fade”. Users can also adjust settings for volume, equaliser and effects, and use waveform and beat data to fine-tune transitions.
The move comes shortly after Apple Music launched its AutoMix feature. Spotify said the rollout is gradual, though users in parts of Europe and Brazil have reported that it is not yet available. Brazil-based subscribers noted that they are still waiting for access to Spotify’s AI DJ, which launched more than two years ago.
The introduction of mixing tools adds to Spotify’s growing list of playlist-focused features, which in recent years have included AI DJ and Daylist. The company says there are now more than eight billion playlists on its platform.
The update arrives as competition between streaming services intensifies. Apple Music has been gaining market share and currently undercuts Spotify on price in several regions, including Australia and New Zealand. Spotify also announced price increases in a number of markets earlier this month, though North America was not affected.
Industry observers suggest Spotify’s focus on playlist features may be part of a strategy to retain subscribers as rival platforms expand their offerings.
