Tanzania: Rayvanny exits WCB Wasafi
Tanzanian bongo flava star Rayvanny has parted ways with the Diamond Platnumz-owned Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) record label.
The singer, who has had an incredibly successful career with WSB, broke the news via a video posted on social media on Tuesday, in which he says he left the WCB to focus on his own label, Next Level Music (NLM).
In the video, Rayvanny details his time at WCB and his great working relationship with Diamond Platnumz. He says he admires and respects Diamond and will forever be grateful for his help.
“It’s been six years since we started working together,” the singer said. “Love and unity has been a key ingredient to our success at Wasafi.”
Diamond responded to the video, saying: “NLM president! Let's go!”
Rayvanny released his first single on WCB Wasafi titled ‘Kwetu’ in 2016. He has become a household name not only in Tanzanian music circles but globally. Some of his achievements include being nominated at the prestigious Premios Juventud, a Hispanic entertainment awards show, in June after featuring on Colombian singer Maluma’s hit ‘Mama Tetema’.
He was also the first African act to perform at the MTV Europe Music Awards during this year’s event in Budapest, Hungary. In 2017, he became the first Tanzanian and second East African artist after Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo to win a BET Award.
Rumours of Rayvanny leaving WCB Wasafi started circulating in 2020 when Diamond Platnumz revealed that the singer would be starting his own label. Rayvanny launched NLM in March 2021 and signed promising singer Macvoice as his first artist.
